Shadow Sideshow : Ink, watercolour, and collage mixed media on paper.

Watercolour, sharpie marker, Watercolour pencils. Natural fibre collage elements and a coating of gel medium on cartridge paper.

This was a piece I just played with until it delclared itself finished with the addition of some collage along the top of the work.

The gel medium made it difficult to scan and photograph as it is very shiny. the original also has brush strokes in the gel medium which resemble crosshatching.

I had fun with this anyway.

The original is A3 size paper. 297×420 mm.

Very nice – love the drama of the line and color. As a side note, do you have any advice on photographing a piece that is coated in gel medium. Many of my pieces have that shine from gel or irridescent paint.

It is funny you ask that because Uta Mooney gave me a tip as I am having dramas with this too – she suggested a coat of matt varnish to eliminate shine. However I am not sure if that would detract from a piece that is intentionally glossy / iridescent (I am still contemplating this option).

For this photograph I ended up not using a flash and trying to eliminate any light sources from reflecting on the surface. In the end I photographed in my hallway with natural light coming from behind the work but nothing from over my shoulder or the sides. It still took 5 or so shots to get one that worked. Then I needed to adust the lighting with image editing software as it was too dark.

So if you discover the secret or someone else knows then let me know too please :)
