War Eagle Mill, Rogers Arkansas, Usa.
Canon PowerShot S3 IS
FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHY IN EXPLORE!!

The mill dates back to 1832, but was destroyed three times, and last rebuilt in 1973. The mill currently operates as an undershot gristmill and houses a store and restaurant. The bridge and mill are located at about 10 miles east of the city of Rogers in War Eagle, Arkansas.
Sylvanus and Cathryn Blackburn moved to the War Eagle Valley in 1832 and built a mill next to War Eagle Creek.. In 1848 a flood pushed the mill into the river, washing it downstream and completely destroying it. The Blackburns rebuilt the mill and expanded it to include a sawmill. Business prospered as the local population increased.
In 1973, Jewel Medlin purchased the property. His wife Leta and daughter Zoe Medlin Caywood found blueprints and rebuilt the mill for the third time. The design was modified slightly to bring back the undershot waterwheel that had been used over 100 years earlier. War Eagle Mill is the only working watermill in Arkansas, and is powered by an eighteen-foot cypress waterwheel. They mill and sell organic grain, cereal and flour products commercially on site.

It is a bit sad that the water wheel can not be seen, but one has to remember it sits on a raging river during the spring, and the fall rains. Without the concrete wall for protection during flood seasons, the wheel would be totally destroyed.

We’ve been there! We’ve been there! Soooooooooo cool, this photo, and the historical explanation, too! That really is a very neat place, and I can still see the inside of the mill in my mind – the store, with its sacks of grains and flours for sale, as well as much other merchandise, and the bridge, and riverbed. I say riverbed, because there sure wasn’t much water there when we were there…..or at least, I know I have a photo I took where there’s not much water, but the view surely was pretty. Ah, now I have to look up some of my Arkansas photos in my computer! We’ve also been to War Eagle Cavern, as we enjoy going through the local caves in Arkansas. Have you been there too, perhaps? Doggone it, now you’ve got me wanting even more to go visit Arkansas again, and that’s such a long drive from here!

  • LOL! Michelle, you are way overdue for a visit to Arkansas…..do it in th FALL!!! Cant beat the Ozarks Fall COLORS!! The water table really drop during the hot months of Summer…….I cant help but think on days gone by while visiting here…dad used to take out corn here to have it milled for the animals, and for our yearly supply of cornmeal :)) Lots of memories for me! GOTTA find some time to get your way, see if you have uploaded any of your Arkansas images yet!! HAVE YOU?? This is one place one will never forget afer visiting….spring & fall are the best time though :)xx Carolyn
