I´ve heard quite a few interpretations of this picture. My son is convinced that the egg in the rabbit´s hand is actually a colourful bandage and the reason why the rabbit looks so sad.. Others have told me that the rabbit is hitchhiking and waiting for the ship with the two mice and baby bunny. I have utterly forgotten my intention while painting it, but when I look at it it seems to me that she (the rabbit) is not sad, but rather angry, because it´s her job to colour and hide stupid eggs and noone cares that she also has babybunny to look after. We catch her the moment she has made a decision….this is gonna be the last egg she´s ever hidden…and she´s gonna make sure noone ever finds it. She is about to throw it into the waves….Of course my son is not convinced at all…It´s a bandage, he still claims…and it doesn´t matter that I´m the one who painted it.
