FEATURED in ALL GLORIOUS LILIES, in ONE SINGLE FLOWER ON DISPLAY, in CLOSE-UPS IN NATURE, in ENCHANTED FLOWERS, in NATURE’S PATTERNS AND DESIGNS, in 60 AND BEYOND, in FABULOUS FLOWERS and in WILDFLOWERS OF NORTH AMERICA

Trillium luteum, or yellow wakerobin is a spring wildflower with native populations in the Great Smoky Mountains and surrounding areas. It occurs in parts of North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Kentucky, usually in the shade of mature deciduous trees on calcium-rich soils.Yellow trillium falls within the sessile group (the flower appears to arise directly from the bracts and there is no pedicel). Typically flowers in April and May. Its twisted yellow petals distinguish it with a lemony fragrance. It can be found in deciduous forests, open woods, along rocky stream banks, and in rich mature forest on calcareous substrates. Yellow trillium was long considered a color morph of the more widely distributed Trillium cuneatum, but studies that are more recent have shown it to be a distinct species – Trillium luteum.

Photographed in the woods of Winterthur Museum in Delaware (USA)
