Kay, this is amazing! What were your settings? What lens did you use? Stunning shot!

  • Cain Doherty replied

It was a bit of fiddling around in fact. A five image stack, aligned with hugin, screened, curves layer on top. Each image shot at iso1600, f/4, 20sec, focus at infinity, 17mm with 350D. cheers Alison.

  • Allison Lane

This is fantastic. I have tried similar but obviously am not doing how you have said. The whole, 5 shot, blending this with that then doing it again, then giving it a hug :). It would be great if a tutorial on how to achieve this was done. The result is just superb.

And were it possible that man could number
the particles of the earth, yea, millions of earths like this,
    it would not be a beginning to the number of thy creations;
and thy curtains are stretched out still; and yet thou art there,
    and thy bosom is there; and also thou art just;
thou art merciful and kind forever.

I’ve seen shots taken like this before but they mention that the camera has to be modified (ie the sensor) to recieve infrared from space, does your 350D have any modifications?

    Fantasic Photo too!

  • Cain Doherty replied

    no mods – read above!

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

Hey dude u took these through a telescope right?

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

Because I’ll tell u what I have 1 and no 17mm view will show u this.

  • Cain Doherty replied

haha – how much do you want to bet?

  • Cain Doherty replied

this link will show you the view at approx 10mm shot by my uni mate: http://www.pbase.com/escalus/image/48636566

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

Is thay eye piece through a telescope ?

  • Cain Doherty replied

no. if you’re claiming to know so much about this stuff, what’s the angle of view i’ve physically covered in this shot? I think you’ll find it’s 75 degrees (the angle of view of 17mm on a 350D).

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

Both of you are full of it , that is N.A.S.A

  • Cain Doherty replied

    you can’t be serious?!

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

That is a N.A.S.A photo and both of you are totally full of it.

  • Cain Doherty replied

i’d be honored if you considered it to be that good!

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

Get real the milky way moves and your saying , what was the shutter speed . 20 seconds. So you have a tracker on your tripod?

  • Cain Doherty replied

at 17mm the movement is hardly noticeable

  • Cain Doherty replied

do you have an email address? i will send you a sample shot with exif data. unprocessed of course.

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

Hey I know how things move out there and if u had a shutter speed of 20 seconds , u need a tracker on your tripod . 20 seconds gives u lines unless u have a motor to track on the tripod.

  • Cain Doherty replied

i’m saying i will send you a photograph to prove to you it can be done. haha – if i’m right you can buy me a motor.

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

So you use the radio photographic process? With motorised computer star tracking on your tripod . Thing is Canons don’t do that without a telescope and a adapter which slots the camera in the eye piece.

  • Cain Doherty replied

how many times do i have to tell you i used nothing of the sort? why are you so skeptical?

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

Because I take photos of outer space and unless u have comuterprised tracking on the scope it can not be done . A normal camera physically can not take this shot .

  • Cain Doherty replied

i think i have proved it’s possible with none of the equipment you mention and i am willing to settle your disbelief. what would it take?

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

It can only be taken through a telescope with a radio graphic adapter with computers on the lens taking 500 shots and a computer star chart tracker on the scope . A 20 second exposure will give you a blurred black and white shot.

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

    Your full of it.

  • Cain Doherty replied

ok – this is borderline harassment now. how can you even say that when you haven’t tried it under the same conditions?

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

So your saying u took this through a normal camera , normal tripod with a 20 second exposure ?

  • Cain Doherty replied

now that we’re back on track – yes – it can definitely be done with that equipment

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

I shoot all night with a telescope and camera . I know the results mate.

  • Cain Doherty replied

    well i don’t – i’m telling you i wish i did

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

Remember if you publish a photo ( radio graphic ) from N.A.S.A and you don’t tell people they shot it they will kick your arse . I’m going through the N.A.S.A photos now looking for that nebula.

  • Cain Doherty replied

i think you’ll find i have the copyright – but happy searching nonetheless!

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

When I find it , your gone . I would recomend u take it down otherwise you will be sued by N.A.S.A

  • Cain Doherty replied

now i think i will report your actions

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

Like Mark said unless you modify your camera , it is impossible.

  • Rocketchook

    Rocketchook

    Your a hoax.

  • Keegan Wong

    Keegan Wong

Lol RC, chill out dude. The reason why you can get this shot is because a) it has to be a clear blue sky b) its a series of BLENDED shots my friend. That means that its multiple shots put onto one single shot. I’ve done a 10 minute exposure before and I manage to get similar results…and it was just one photo.
