This is part of a series that will present the registry numbers and names (and ship pennants) of notable Starfleet Vessels throughout the Star Trek franchise, starting at the beginning.
The U.S.S. Prometheus was the first in her class – a vessel designed for deep-space tactical assignments. She was outfitted with the Mark II Emergency Medical Hologram, ablative armor, holo-emitters on every deck, and a multi-vector assault mode, which separated the ship into three warp-capable combat-ready sections. Unfortunately, during her shakedown cruise, the ship was overrun by Romulan forces. However, U.S.S. Voyager’s EMH was transported aboard and with the help of the EMH Mark II, retook the ship and delivered it back to Starfleet, as well as informing Starfleet Headquarters about the true current state of Voyager, which was deemed lost 14 months earlier.
(Note: The episode had the registry number as NX-59650 on its hull, but designer Michael Okuda wanted the number to be NX-74913. However, the people at Foundation Imaging did not get the memo in time, hence two different numbers, but for the sake of choosing one number for this design, I yield to Mr. Okuda’s authority, since the hull markings were done in error and could not be corrected in time.)
