What an amazing image, the hair-like feathers, the menace of the red eye and that incredible beak, a face that swings from the comical to the satanic verging on the primeval. Oomoo face brought back to me my memories of my first encounter with emus. I was working on a cattle station in the far north west of Queensland up in the Gulf country. One of the boys told me they were extremely curious and how the indigenous people hunted them. One morning I got up to discover a mob of them in the paddock just behind the homestead paddock. I approached them walking on my knees, they have less fear of things smaller then them, waving my arms around and throwing my hat in the air and catching it. I then flopped down on my back to see if this method of approaching a mob of emus worked. Sure enough it did and they surrounded me. Looking at Oomoo’s face brings back the memory of the old man standing over me and pecking me on the forehead. This was the point where I was supposed to leap up with my spear or killing boomerang and get one for my tea. Not only didn’t I have a spear or killing boomerang but I never had any intention of ever killing one of these magnificent birds and suddenly realized I’d just done something incredibly stupid. Although the chicks were almost fully-grown an emu is very protective of it’s young and can get quite aggressive and dangerous if it feels you are threatening them. I stood up slowly and they backed off. I then yelled at them to bugger off in no uncertain terms and fortunately they listened to me. Thankyou for your image and the memories it brought flooding back.

  • Christopher Bi... replied

hey mr dragon thanks for taking the time to tell me your story, they are such amazing creatures. primeval i agree, he is kind of like a dinosaur which didnt get to far into this evolution caper! having lived with one, i cant imagine laying on the ground in between them that just sounds too scary. glad you liked this image, its one of my favorite of him. :))

  • twindragon

    twindragon

It was quite terrifying mate. I just wanted to get closer to them to have a better look at them. I didn’t expect this method of getting close to emus would be as affective as it was LOL. My name’s Mike by the way.

thanks oomoo (so named after the shiraz) is a great crazy family member, of course you always have to watch your back because he is a native bird that isnt domesticated. but such an awesome creature to watch and interact with. glad you like this image :))))

    Great shots Chris x
Soooo what is it you do with yr emus ? You breed them ?

  • Christopher Birtwistle-Smith

    Christopher Bi...

lol Miss S.K.DoG i have no idea which was which, we would have loved to breed them and get some eggs for Andrew to carve, but to get a mate for oomoo, well emu gals are pretty picky! if the male doesnt weigh enough – thats it, romance over! and the fighting begins. so we have to really know what we are doing. glad you like him, i happen to think he is gorgeous :))))

  • rain-dogs

    rain-dogs

brilliant portrait shot they are such characters…I knew an emu called percy who not only stuck his head in a can of green paint but also in the furnace +melted his beak together and the owner had to saw it open he looked like a right mutant deformed and green…would scare the kids bigtime as he lived in a tourist park….......cheers

  • Christopher Bi... replied

that is a horrible story jef but i find myself lmao at the thought of this scary beast of a chicken chasing down tourists as they try and photograph him! they are such inquisitive delicate creatures though. delicate in the sense that they damage easily because like percy , oomoo gets himself into all sorts of crazy predicaments. we have to keep him separated from the alpacas so they dont kick him and break his legs too.

  • H M Bascom

    H M Bascom

  • paperbag

    paperbag

wow those eyes are great! your description really adds to the character of the emu..and it also looks like he has big bushy eyebrows haha

  • Christopher Birtwistle-Smith

    Christopher Bi...

thank you mr bag, he is certainly a character, he escaped last week and took himself for a walk along the hysen trail, to our neighbours about 1.2 km away. but that is a whole other story involving getting an emu into the boot of a hatchback for the ride home. thanks for stopping by :)
