Tom Tom & Oomoo

Christopher Birtwistle-Smith

Tom Tom & Oomoo

i wanted to post something different to anything ive posted so far, found this….

A photo of my Tom Tom and Oomoo when we first got them, they were 6 days old in this photo.

Tom Tom (female) is no longer with us, but Oomoo is and he lords it over our English Mastiff, who is himself 80 kg!

I have always loved Emu’s so when Andrew suggested we get 2, i was so excited.

For those of you not living in Australia, Emus are not usually pets.

emu feathers are an amazing thing
feathers

Aboriginal Emu dance

these guys nailed it completely!!!!!!!

  • Christopher Bi... replied

thank you ellen this shot brings back memories of us keeping them indoors to keep them warm, that was before we realised that our dog thaddy could raise them, i have some beautiful shots of Andrew sleeping on the swing seat in the back garden, thaddy lying next to the seat and the emu’s lying next to thaddy. priceless! andrew would kill me if i posted them here though . lol…. c xx

  • Christopher Bi... replied

thanks wendy, its easy when you have a captive audience….....they were a real asset when selling our woodville house, we locked them into a small yard at the side of the house, when people came through, they would do a double take as the emus passed the kitchen window. it was a hoot! ....c xx

Fabulous creatures! Did little Tom Tom meet with some premature end? Please keep us updated on Oomoo’s progress and the fun I’m sure you will have with him in your family.

  • Christopher Bi... replied

thank you helen, im pleased that you can see how fabulous they are, yes tom tom didnt make it, they are quite vulnerable to simple things like fences, which is very distressing. they are especially vulnerable when helicopters round up farm animals and hot air balloons over head, they just freak and run until something stops them. I will definitely post more of oomoo over time thank you for sharing my interest. c xx

  • Steve Chapple

    Steve Chapple

Great first keeper of an image. Glad to see you have managed to keep one this long. I’ve heard they actually make great friends when you’ve kept them long enough!

  • Christopher Bi... replied

thanks stephen, emus are great creatures. i love having oomoo around, he is definitely a unique animal. at 2, 3, 4 in the morning we can hear his sound, like a drum beating, as he walks the property. its disturbing for someone staying over for the first time, but once you know what the sound is, its like he is on a constant watch protecting the property and its comforting. unless something goes horribly wrong, i am sure we will have him for the next 20 years or so…...c

  • Alan Findlater

    Alan Findlater

hi hilary, that is very strange, ive heard of that happening to some people here now and then, ive been pretty preoccupied with my exhibition ‘inkedup’ and havent added much or been around too much. so that could be it too. anyway thank you for stopping by and letting me know you like my babies! unfortunately tom tom has gone to heaven but oomoo our boy is full grown. i want to upload some images but mostly they are blurry, he is harder to photograph than most things because he never stands still! lol. have a great day and thank you for the favorite! i really appreciate it…xx
