Short-Beaked Echidna – Tachyglossus Aculeatus
This photo was taken in the South East of South Australia.
A couple of echidnas reside next to my childhood home. When I went back there for a holiday I wanted to study them. On most days I would find this individual and I would sit and watch, captivated by his personality. He at first would dig down and hide away anytime I came close, but after a while he became accustom to me and would even walk up over my shoes and dig right by my feet. On this occasion I stumbled across him in a very small clearing amongst the thick scrub (which had made it very hard to get a nice photo of him before now.) He looked over as if to say “Go on then take your photo”. To me it looks like he is almost smiling as he poses in the sunlight.
