Water Vole – Arvicola amphibius
This photo was taken at Rainham Marshes, Rainham, London. Rainham Marshes is a fantastic place to see these little guys swim around and eat the reeds and weed that grow in the water there. This baby water vole was part of a small group that had been foraging together. I was lucky enough to see five of them at once which consisted of four juveniles and one adult. It was a fantastic sight to see. They became protective of their little eating platforms that they have scattered on the waters edge and if another vole came close, a lot of squeaking and chasing would occur. What a fantastic way to spend an afternoon.
