Great Spotted Woodpecker – Dendrocopos major
This photo was taken in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom
I found this nest being hollowed out very early in spring by this gorgeous woodpecker. You could hear their drumming all around the forest, but they were tricky to spot. I waited for some hours near to the hole but they flew in and out so quickly and then disappeared for a long period of time. On this occasion my patience was finally rewarded when the female paused, allowing me to briefly capture this shot.
