Scars

A U.S. soldier shows off a scar from the surgery required to remove multiple pieces of ammunition shrapnel sustained when his squad came under direct enemy fire while on patrol in Mosul, Iraq. As of October 2007 over 27,000 U.S. military personnel have been wounded in Iraq since the beginning of the war in March of 2003.

Great shot. A real contradiction in the casual way he is displaying such a major injury.

Powerful shot. I once read that shamans have a scar on their abdomen. You could be a great spiritual force.

If I’m not mistaken I think those two tags on top of his chain are of friends lost in the war. I am also moved by his cross over his own tag and while i agree that he seems to be posing in a manner of being proud of his scar, i am guessing it’s about being proud to have fought for his country. It sickens me to see this beautiful body with that scar and the message here is beyond powerful. Such a waste.

I dont sense prie in his wound, but i do sense that he is saying, “That’s right, I lived through it, and yes it could happen again, but damn it, I am a US Soldier, All the way!!

thankyou for sharing this, and thanks to him also, but i do wish he didnt get harmed, or any of them, i wish there was no wars at all

This image invokes, sadness and anger in me…........yes, what a waste of not only the right to have a body free of horrendous scars but also his right to have a mind free of scars…......thank God for kids like these, but they should never ever have to go through these sickening wars….......where will it end?

I must say I love this photo, war is always showen in the movies to be so glmours and its not, its messy and hard and people die everyday. People who get hurt like this and live deserve to be reconized! I love the lighting it plays up the tone, wonderfull shot!

wow this photo is absolutely amazing. looking at it makes me want to break down in tears for the pain that every soldier goes through both physically and emotionally and how horrible it is that often times people only think of the physical injuries that are acquired in war even when often times its the emotional scars that are the most painful and last the longest. though the physical pain that this surgery must have caused is also heartbreaking, I recently went through a much more minor surgery that left me with 3 sets of scars and that was painful enough, I can’t even begin to imagine the amount of pain this must have caused.

  • Christopher Ba... replied

I’m sorry for your pain as well Violet. It seems pain is one of the many discomforts we all get to enjoy in some form or another. You are right on about emotional scars. My friend was very lucky and I love him so much, but we both carry baggage and scars that no one will ever see or understand for that matter. War is a bitch.

What a waste of lives and families and yes, those emotional scars that such trauma causes. I’m sorry you had to experience this – that your friend did – and, for what it’s worth, I admire your talent.

  • Christopher Ba... replied

Well thanks, but don’t feel sorry for either of us, we may share physical and psychological wounds, but we knew what we were getting into. I feel privileged to have served with him and FOR our country.
