D.C. Protest I

D.C. Protest I

During a relatively peaceful 2002 protest against the World Bank in Washington, D.C., anti-war demonstrators began to change the situational climate of the march. Tensions between protesters and police, who were expecting a violent demonstration, began to rise. Police began to arrest everyone that they managed to surround inside Pershing Park, guilty, as well as innocent bystanders alike. In relative anticipation of the police’s reaction, this young man wrote the telephone numbers of civil defense lawyers on his arms before the demonstrations even began.

I have been at a few demonstrations, mostly as a filmmaker but with my sympathies firmly in the protesting camp and have always found the common sense and preperation of protest organisers to be an example to any business. Prepare, stick together and keep the head seems to be the motto.

Was wondering how you got this shot. Suspicions were confirmed upon reading the previous comments above. It strikes me that this image may represent the first steps toward walking the walk. How far you’ve gone…

  • Christopher Ba... replied

True. You can’t really go much further without actually participating in the act itself..

All three DC protest photos convey tension, distrust – very moving. Fits with the irony with which you write in your profile self-description. Alaska?

  • Christopher Ba... replied

Ha. Irony…I’ll go with that. Film photography is a dying breed and it saddens me to see it go. I am a very distrusting individual and I feel that I can tell a lot about a person from one encounter and from then on, the walls go up, or the tend to hover until some other flag goes up….
