Veteran...
On a day that’s hard to appreciate, or even swallow down, the definition of a Veteran seems unavoidably linked with an older generation. I don’t feel like a Vet. My grandfather is a Veteran, myself on the other hand, I feel as though I fall into an undefinable category. Generation X who has become “Generation Kill,” and subsequently slips right back into society, undetectable. The pain, fear and horror of what we’ve gone through is repressed, so that we can move fluidly back into this madness we call America, and continue our lives. The transition is impossible and just like generations before us, we will never fit it.
Self portrait. 1/30 sec. @ f2.8 with Nikon N90s on self-timed.

I’m hearing you…..
I’m Australian, so don’t know what it’s like for you in the US, but i do know what it’s like to send my husband off to war in todays world. I really hope you find something that fits for you soon….
Sadly we have all too many in your position….
Christopher Ba... replied
Thank you for your kind words and your perspective. Today’s fight is nothing like we’ve ever experienced. My thoughts go out to you and your husband.
Rosemary Scott
All’s good…. he’s home safe. Take care….

The plugs in the background add a dimension to this image…Like plugging back into society.
Christopher Ba... replied
Hmm, I never thought about that aspect, but I like the correlation. Thanks Irma!

I wish our government offered more in the way of support for soldiers trying to transition back to civilian life. I can not begin to imagine the horror of what veterans of war have experienced. Both of my brothers and my husband are veterans of the Desert Storm. They don’t talk about their experiences except in the vaguest of terms, but I’ve seen something going on behind their eyes . . . something painful. We can never thank our soldiers enough for their service, neither can we adequately compensate them for their pain—emotional as well as physical.
Christopher Ba... replied
Thank you Helen. I to wish there was more to transition towards, but I am also honored by those who have served before me and I thank your family for their service as well!

Thank you Christopher! Words can’t express how much admiration I have for a soldier, when I see a man or woman in uniform out and about, I just want to walk up and hug them, thank them for the sacrifice they make to keep us safe, something I and many people would or could never do. It’s amazing to me, the courage and strength you must have. I never do walk up and hug a soldier but instead, I use sign language and sign a very simple Thank You, or just mouth it. I always get a warm response of You’re Welcome or a simple nod. God Bless!
Christopher Ba... replied
Diette, it is definitely the simple things and a warm gesture that makes doing a job that most don’t want to do, worth it. I always appreciated the kind remarks I got while I was in uniform, whether they were genuine, or just keeping there opinions to themselves. It is a hard enough job without having others look down their nose at you. I’m sure you brightened those soldier’s day! Thanks again.

What horrifies me is that after all the times we have gone to war, and all the times we have brought veterans home, we STILL don’t get it right. That not enough is being done to look after you all. I am bothered when you say you will never fit in…..because if it were not for you all, what would there be left to fit into? What you come home to, should be yours, due to the hard won fight.. WE are the ones who don’t fit in in, with our sheltered little lives, in our deceptive little worlds…..with out you…..there would be no truth.
Christopher Ba... replied
Marny…I am truly speechless. Your comments gave me goosebumps and I am honored by your candor. Thank you for making my day a bit sweeter. God bless you.
