Flamingo Tongue by

Shot in Grand Cayman, BWI, Just entered this in the Flora and Fauna gallery at the Franklin Park Arts Center in Virginia!

This photo is one of many taken while living and working in Grand
Cayman. My love of photography and the underwater world comes
together here. I hope you will enjoy this photograph of a Flamingo
Tongue. It is a species of small but brightly colored sea snail, a
marine gastropod mollusk in the family Ovulidae. When it is alive,
the snail appears bright orange-yellow in color with black markings.
However, these colors are not in the shell, but are only due to the
thin flaps of live mantle tissue which usually cover the shell. The
mantle flaps can be retracted, exposing the shell, but this usually
happens only when the animal is attacked.
