Artist's Description

This one-room school house was built in 1917 in Piper, Kansas, after the first school house was destroyed by a tornado. Students attended school in this building until 1962. In 1975, the building was moved to the Agricultural Hall of Fame and Museum in Bonner Springs, Kansas, which is in metropolitan Kansas City, where I live.

I’ve loved one-room school houses since I was a little girl and saw the one in South Dakota where my mother went to school and later taught. A restored one-room school house is in a park near my house. I visit it sometimes. It’s a trip back in time. Most of these schools had portraits of presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln on the walls, as you can see here, although Washington is hard to see here.
