During a severe storm in Santa Maria, California, USA. The coverage of these bolts stretch for miles. On the left is Orcutt, California and on the right is the Santa Maria Valley with Guadalupe, California being struck. Hence the name “Striking Guadalupe”. This was taken with a 30 second exposure set to f/22 at 24mm.

I am self taught and believe that I have a gift and must share it with the world. The interplay of light in nature is one of the earths most wonderful gifts and I try my best to capture that moment in time.

Another exceptional shot, Cathy. Nothing like the thrill of a nice lightning capture. Awesome work!

now that is some intense lightning! I know what it feels like to be that close to them as well. I just recently caught a couple of bolts at 20mm, and that was blooming close!
Hi Rikki. Thank you for all of your comments on my photos. Wow, 20mm…that is close. This was one intense night. Lightning was everywhere and striking at about 8 strikes per minute!! I have a movie on YouTube that has the 30 best shots I took that night. Just search for “Lightning Santa Maria”.

Yes i’ve seen that video. very well shot. :D
I bet it was hard to capture it, looks amazing!
It took quite a few tries as we don’t get storms like this, but I was finally able to hone it in. Thank you for commenting.

Nice….. Y’all get many lightning storms out there?
Thank you Dennis! No we don’t. This was a very rare storm. The National Weather Service called it a 50 year storm.

BTW…is this shooting back toward Vandenburg or just north?
I am looking due west towards the Santa Maria Valley. Vandenberg is just south, south west of this. I take it you are familiar with this area.
