One Time Use Only Photography Pricing? by Cathy L. Gregg

Posted on October 27, 2010

Hello fellow Bubblers,

I have a question. I was recently contacted by a company that wants to use one of my photographs for a wine label. I would like to quote them a price and I am unsure of what to charge them. I know and they know that I will not sell the copyright.

I have been told to sell it in the range of $500 – $1,000 US, but I don’t know if this is too high. Has anyone of you sold an image for “one time use only” to a customer, and if so, how much if I may ask?

Thank you for your time and have a great day.

    First use fee of $1,000:00
    and one cent per label

no one can object to one cent per label, but if they sell 30,000 bottles a year ?

  • Cathy L. Gregg:

Thank you Kriss for helping me. They are actually a business firm that gives bottles away as gifts. Sorry, I guess I should have explained that better. I did send the proposal off and they are to get back to me today. So, fingers crossed :)

sell them a 1 time use and hold the copyright….1,000 to 2,000 would be acceptable..also inquire if they will be using it in media advertisement?..If so you should be credited accordingly..Remember if they arrainged the photo shoot and hired a photography studio…..

  • Cathy L. Gregg:

Great info, I didn’t think about the price they would have to pay in hiring someone. Thank you very much.

Don’t go too low! I wouldn’t do under $1000. Like CLiPiCs said-who knows how many bottles they’ll use it on! And rightly so as canonman99 said….a photo shoot and a photographer doing this wouldn’t do it for cheap.

I can check with a friend that does a lot of different type of photography what he’s suggest if you like.

  • Cathy L. Gregg:

Thank you Crystal. It’s a business firm that puts their own labels on wine bottles to give away as gifts. It’s not a huge amount of wine. I think just staying with the one fee is enough. I appreciate the offer of asking your friend, but by the amount of responses I think I’m good. I have sent the proposal, so wish me luck :)

I don’t know but I would go along with CLiPiCs advise…that sounds like wise to me…Renee

  • Cathy L. Gregg:

Thank you Renee. Wish me luck today :)

I’m curiuos, is your photo on Redbubble. Canoman99 and clipics advice.
    Congrats.

  • Cathy L. Gregg:

Actually it’s not on here. It is on my website. It’s in my vineyard section and one of the last photos, so they did go through and look pretty hard for a photo. I was glad to know that :) I did send the proposal out so we will see.

The $1000 figure sounds good to me, personally I wouldn’t complicate it with a charge per bottle. They already know how many bottles they are going to produce I would assume and at what price they are going to sell it so they have made a calculation already on how much they want to invest in the artwork for the bottle. Is it a lable for a specific wine of theirs or the label for the winery in general. Many wine companies have the same art work for all their wines, perhaps only changing it for a special small production boutique wine. Is it a large winery or boutique? Is it a limited production, expensive wine or high production value priced or somewhere in between. Obviously they have put some thought into the label and believe your photo fits the message and the marketing target for the wine, I don’t think they just saw your photo and said that is pretty let’s use that if you know what I mean, so don’t cheat yourself. Tony

  • Cathy L. Gregg:

    Hi Tony,
It’s a business firm that gives out wine as gifts. They go to a winery and have them put their labels on wine that the business wants to give away. They did not “just see my photo”, as you say. They went through my entire website, because the photo that they found is one of the last ones in my vineyard portfolio. I was quite excited to know that they took so much time on my website. They want to use one label and then switch out the varietals as needed. They have asked me to design the wine label as well so I sent them a package deal. They are suppose to get back to me today, so let’s hope for the best :)) Thank you for taking the time in answering and for the links. They are very helpful.
    Take care Tony,
    Cathy
