Mzansi is a local word used for “South Africa”.
Our country hosted the 2010 Fifa World cup, so I thought I would design some T-Shirts for the occasion!
In South Africa we have 11 official languages, and our national anthem uses 5 of them. Needless to say, it is difficult to remember it. In this T-shirt the South African national anthem makes the shape of Africa. And it is conveniently written upside down so that when you wear the T-shirt to a football game (or wherever you may need to sing the anthem), you can read the words off your t-shirt while you are wearing it!
Our South African national anthem is called Nkosi Sikele’ iAfrika… this is it (with the translation):
Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika
(God Bless Africa)
Maluphakanyisw’ uphondo lwayo,
(Raise high Her glory)
Yizwa imithandazo yethu,
(Hear our Prayers)
Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo
(God bless us, we her children)
Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,
(God protect our nation)
O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho,
(End all wars and tribulations)
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,
(Protect us, protect our nation)
Setjhaba sa South Afrika – South Afrika.
(Our nation South Africa – South Africa)
Uit die blou van onse hemel,
(Ringing out from our blue heavens)
Uit die diepte van ons see,
(From the depth of our seas)
Oor ons ewige gebergtes,
(Over our everlasting mountains)
Waar die kranse antwoord gee,
(Where the echoing crags resound)
Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In South Africa our land.
I have recently turned the design “right way up” for print on other media such as throw pillows, iPad and iPhone covers and for posters.
