(I had a saturday morning to myself and went ‘into town’ as we say here. These are just some of things that I noticed and for some unholy reason I started signing ‘My Favourite Things’ from the Sound of Music. I know I know… it’s ok I’m kicking myself in the head on your behalf :)
So when you read this, you have to sing it to the tune of the song :) In other words, If I’m going down, you’re coming with me !!!)
Padlocks on Bridges and Tourist directions
Trousers of tartan and Hair with defections
Paper Back Novels applied to a sting
These are a few of my favourite things
Rail fastened artists and side alley shopping
The smell of falafels and Dreds before cropping
A Protester on crutches with feathers and wings
These are a few of my favourite things
Electric blue trainers and price tags gone missing
Two men from Persia surreptitiously kissing
Girls with chrome fingers and vegetable rings
These are a few of my favourite things
Invites from Facebook from friends that are dying
Pastels on pavements and candidates lying
The sounds of a busker who’s singing the King
These are a few of my favourite things
When my friend dies
When my girl cries
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favourite things
And then I don’t feel so bad

It ain’t easy be a poet with musical tears me thinks….. Bravo Cathal gotta give you big faves for this clever witty musical poetical ditty.
Love your coming out of the poetry closet! xx
Coming out of any closet singing a tune from the Sound of Music has got to earn some brownie points surely! :) I don’t know where the tune came from becasue I started penning a story about Padlocks on Bridges and then Julie Andrews started singing it !!!!! What the hell are you doing up so late over the other side of the world anyway :)

I was waiting for a lullaby I guess but will have to settle for a Cathal in a Julie Andrew’s frock instead ;o)
Mother of Jaysis, now that’s an image to keep anybody awake !

Will I ever be able to eat a falafal again without thinking of smelly dreds!! yuck!!
I sang all the way to the end… what a way to end my day… hip hip hooray… xx
Sorry about that Alison, so my marketing plan for Falafal and Dred flavored soup is out then ? :)

Oh, great. Now I’m going to have that friggin’ song stuck in my head all day. It is very funny, Cathal (in a morose, world-weary sort of way). You think you could do something with “My Heart Will Go On”? (I can’t stand Celine Dion.)
Hey I think you should have a go at this too, go on :)
– Cathal .
Ah, and this might be one of MY favourite things now. It’s absolutely lovely! And I wasn’t actually sure I remember the melody at all, but then I started reading and I found I simply HAD to sing it, so it happened all by itself :D
Kirstine, if there was ever a lady who could write some great ‘favorite’ things or observations of the world around her, its you. Go on, give it a go too :) Ye might as well now that the tune is in your head !

I curse you for putting that god awful song in my head. ;~)
Leslie I’ve smacked myself for you, I was humming it in the middle of a meeting in work today !! outrageous !
– Cathal .
Lol- you have a strange collection of favourite things, but a great way of gathering them together! Lol. Singing it prooved tricky with Mika singing along behind me (sadly just the ipod- or equivalent device)
ah yes the effervescent Mika, a tad different to a sex starved nun I think :)

You’re one of a kind, Cathal. Always witty, always whimsical, always ready to kick us in the balls with something poignant. Love it!
Luke I think thats just one of the best damn compliments I’ve received. Kicking people in the balls with my writing would do me just fine my friend :) Thanks for the read as always Luke

While I do have to curse you, I’m afraid, for making that song swirl around my head, this made me nod, laugh out loud, and reread twice. Wonderful work, although I would like to know more about the men from Persia! Now I’m off to find some Elvis to kick Maria out of my head….
As would I Bell. They surfaced from the alcove behind the open door of a bar (a bar that had a live band playing at twelve noon no less), speaking a language now stereotyped to religion and bullets, and after looking back through the smoked glass of the door that had Oliver St John Gogarty stenciled upon it, they smiled and then snogged. For some reason I wanted to cheer ! :) They’d be great for a story sometime. Thanks for the feature too Bell ! cheers

I love this !!! soo catchy…plus I can never remember the words from songs so I love to add my own…this is a tad awesome…I feel like I was walking with you, with all these things…too good…a little snip of the Irish…top of the morning to ya !…
sorry bout your friend though…a good idea to take your singing for a walk to stretch its legs…xxx
seemingly the new trend is to lock a padlock with a persons name on it, to a bridge and to throw away the key. Thats what started this off! When I saw the collection of padlocks and names and just wondered who was dead or who had left. And as passer bus just passed on by, I began to take notes of the things that appealed to me as I walked from Grafton Street and wandered through Trinity College, then on through Temple Bar, over the Halpenny Bridge, on to Henry Street and then back up Capel Street to the Georges Street Arcade. Now, you’ve accompanied on a whistle stop tour of Dublin too!
