PICASSO
I’ve just returned from a weekend up in Brisbane. It wasn’t just any weekend it was a huge turning point for me.
I went to the Picasso exhibition. As I walked through the black curtain into the masters realm my pulse was racing. Standing in front of the first Picasso artwork I was so overcome with emotion tears were spilling down my cheeks.
You might think that I’m exagerating, but to see the works of not only Picasso, but Braque, Ernst, Mattisse, Modigliani, Renoir, Rousseau (there were more) in the flesh was so absolutely a trip out of this world.
In my early teen years I visited an exhibition of some of Picasso’s work at the Sydney Gallery and this made such an impression on me and has been a huge influence in my work. While studying design I was facinated by the artists from the turn of the century and I feel that Picasso was very instrumental in artists looking outside the square.
I recommend this journey to Brisbane before the exhibition ends. Can you even try to imagine a trip into the beginnings of cubism, surrealism, fauvism, expressionism as an artist I don’t believe you can let this opportunity slip past you.

Wow! How awesome for you, Cate!!! It must have been wonderful :-)))))))))) So happy it was as great as you thought it would be, you’ll have memories of it for the rest of your life…

Yes Rhonda I believe it is a very important event in my development as an artist. In order to grow the stimulation that comes from such an event is awesome. Living in a rural area you don’t get a chance to see many masters exhibitions. I would love to live in Paris ….... that would be my ideal.

You lucky girl! I know what you mean about seeing these works in the flesh. It is almost a surreal experience! I had the same experience standing in front of the works at the Musee D’Orsay in Paris. I actually quit my job and started studying full time because of this.

I can understand that Marilyn. Since viewing an exhibition of his work in the 70’s I have had this passion bubbling inside me. My parents were like get a real job. But over the years it continued to grow until there was no stopping it. When I turned 40 I grabbed hold of the steering wheel driving my life and did a complete U turn. So here I am, still on my journey have had a few pit stops along the way but I follow my heart this is my life. The total affiliation that I felt confirms this even more.

Hi Cate,
Yes..i have been to an exhibition like this one a few years ago up there, and I had a similar experience…i had the most spiritual and eery of experiences, because I could almost envisage the ghosts of the famous artists standing by each painting and working on their art….I cannot describe it, cept to say, it is a similar feeling when you look a dolphin straight in the eye, or feel a sense of oneness with the whales passing….there was a certain feeling of being surrounded by the spirits of the masters that far outweighed the actual art for me…..it was incredibly moving, and i can certainly understand why you were in tears….

Yes I wanted to ask them so how do you achieve this result? I was transported back in time. They had old photos and vintage films of Paris between 1910 – 1940. I walked out of there not feeling of this time and place at all. I was somewhere else all the colours were so much brighter, as an artist we see things differently anyway but this just made things extra extrodinary. I just want to paint
