An old idea put to new use.
I was chasing a hot air balloon across south east Lincolnshire trying to get close enough for a decent picture of it when I spotted some wind turbines at Deeping St Nicholas. The sun was going down so I decided to take some pictures of these instead (never did get close enough to that balloon) this is my favorite one of the series.
BTW I never appreciated just how HUGE they are, I managed to walk across the fields right up to one and climbed its steps… I felt like an ant next to it.

Awesome sky! I have done a few of my own windmill photos and I was the same as you. I never realized quite how huge they are till I walked right up to the base of one.

Gorgeous sunset and beautiful wind turbine silhouette – this source of energy is in sore need of promotion! I like how in your descriptions you talk about being on the hunt (or wait) for a certain subject, but end up with a completely different image instead. I’ll bet a great many fantastic images are found in just that way.

Yes I think your right, (on both counts) Lincolnshire has a number of windmills (and I’m talking about the old style of windmill here) which used to grind wheat and other grains for bread. A millers job was considered an important one until the industrial revolution hit britain and flour was produced in large factories by steam engines, now it seems we need windmills again but for a different reason… or maybe it’s the same reason, after all those factories no longer run on steam. I guess in a way the windmill has turned full circle.
As for expecting the unexpected, I think that most of my planned shots end up dissapointing me in some way or other, but the unplanned ones are always a happy delight.

Nice – even the flare suits it. If chasing ballons – find out where they are taking off from and intend landing – or better still get in one! Nice to find a Yellowbelly on RB – I was raised a bit further up the county from you!
