DESCRIPTION:
This image was shot and edited entirely on an Apple iPhone 4. It’s part of an ongoing iPhone appropriation project called Mashed Photatoes.

MASHED PHOTATOES:
As a creative individual I’m pushed everyday to engage in some sort of artistic endeavor. Being a photographer it usually involves shooting some sort of action or some random studio shots. But since I got my first iPhone a few years ago I’ve been thrust into a whole new world and in reality a whole new creative approach. There is no text books or schools that teach what iPhoneography is or how to shoot with an iPhone and really thats the true beauty of it. Your left with a lower res camera, multiple on device applications and the best part…creative freedom.

So what is this Mashed Photatoes business all about? Well it’s exactly what I described above…its my own form of creative freedom. Mashed Photatoes is an ongoing appropriation project I started with my old iPhone 3G and since then I’ve upgraded to the latest iPhone 4. It involves capturing various photographs and mashing together the subject matter into a single image much like a multiple exposure, but at the same time very different. All the workflow is done within the device utilizing an assortment of photography applications. This project is really a product of my surroundings. It started when I lived in the small town of Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast of BC but since then I’ve moved to the City of Victoria. Here in Victoria I’m surrounded by inspiring visuals like the city, nature, graffiti art and the ever changing life I see on the streets. As people move through the city like zombies I’m that weird guy stopping to photograph the sidewalk, a wall and whatever randomness captures my attention. I step out of life’s day to day norm to feed my need to create visual art. The final creations in my project usually hold some sort of message but ultimately I leave it for ones own interpretation. The piece shown in the collection are all shot in Victoria, BC.

If your into photography and have an iPhone or iTouch go download some photo apps to fine tune your skills. Shooting with your iPhone can be very rewarding as you get instant results and in the day & age we live you can share your creativity within seconds. I’d get into talking about how to use your iPhone but really that would ruin all the fun of being an iPhoneographer.
