God Jul!

God Jul!

This one’s a little obscure outside Scandinavia. It’s a greeting for St. Lucia Day, which opens the Yuletide celebration in countries from the Netherlands to the Baltics. Traditionally, the eldest daughter of the family wakes early on December 13, dons a white dress with a red sash, and a wreath of lingonberry boughs and candles. She sings to wake the rest of the family, who then join her for a breakfast of buns and coffee. The candles refer to the fire which failed to consume Saint Lucy, and also offer a welcome glimpse of light in the middle of long, dark Scandinavian winters.

    Just wondering, what is your relation to Norway (ore Scandinavia). You see I’m from Norway…...

  • caseycastille replied

    Believe it or not, after five months, I just saw this. Sorry for the belated reply. Thanks for your comment! I have no relation to Scandinavia except that I’ve always been fascinated by Scandinavian people and cultures (precipitated by a crush I had on a Norwegian boy when I was eight years old).

    I am swedish and I totally get the lucia feeling! warm and tender, fuzzy. nice take with the rye.
    the lucia song (fyi :P) goes like this; ” night sweep´s with dow steps, tru farm and cottage, around earth that sun have forgiven, the shadows are brooding, then tru our dark house, she steps in a crown of light, santa lucia, santa lucia
    the night were so vault and silent, now we can hear it swing, in every silent room, of murmurs/whispers like wings, see on our treshold stands, whiteclad with light in her hair, santa lucia, santa lucia
    the dark will soon us flee, from the valleys of the earth, when she a wondorous, word to us speak;
    the day(light) will again and new, arise from a rosy sky, santa lucia, santa lucia”
    haha, word for wor.. :)
