Flooded camera by Caroline Swinburne

Posted on April 09, 2008

I was devastated when I flooded my 3-month old Canon G9 camera under Mordialloc Pier in early March. 40 minutes into the dive, the flash stopped firing properly (missed a few great opportunities of fighting dumpling squid as a result too!) and then it got a bit hot. I noticed some condensation, then realised it was leaking. I shot to the surface (at no more than 18m per minute :) after signalling my buddy, but alas the camera was well and truly soaking in its own battery-flavoured juices.

I took it back to Canon the next morning as a warranty claim, since if it was a problem with something in the o-ring, it would have flooded early in the dive.

Absolutely stoked when 3 weeks later I got a call from Canon telling me they’d replaced the camera with a new one, and when I went to pick it up they’d replaced the housing too. Once it’s leaked once…

So kudos to Canon for not treating me like a criminal! I’ve been using Canon digital cameras underwater for about 18 months and they’re fantastic.
