Big Cave Buffalo

Big Cave Buffalo

The painting is acrylic on gallery wrapped stretched canvas and is 24”w x 18”h.

This painting was inspired by the art I was lucky enough to look at and study in the galleries of Santa Fe and Taos New Mexico.

This painting was also inspired by ancient images of buffalo and cattle that can be found in caves and canyons across the North American Southwest (which included the area which is now called New Mexico) and in Europe.

I have read in books about ancient petroglyphs and cave paintings of the Southwest that the spiral image is thought by some archeologists to represent the kiva and by some to represent migration and by some to represent a water crossing. The hand print is meant to represent a request for a blessing.
