This was taken in the churchyard of the Church of St. Lazarus in Bethany, Israel. The courtyard was all stone and there were beautiful potted plants on large stones all over the courtyard, creating a very unique and beautiful display of colour as you approached the front entrance to this church. Bethany is situated outside of Jerusalem on the eastern slopes of the Mount of Olives. According to written documents and archaeological evidence, this area was settled in ancient times.
Bethany is particularly known as the place where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11). Grand churches were erected above the tomb of Lazarus and over the location of Mary’s and Martha’s home.
