The Trophies Of My Life
Written by CarolM

As I stand here
looking at all the trophies on the shelf
I remember my youth
In fact
I remember when I lost my first tooth

It was baseball, It was track, it was whatever it was
I kept my trophies on the bookcase in my room
I was so proud of them

I’ve earned many trophies in my life
I’d say the best of them all, though
is my wife
Don’t tell her I that called her a trophy
She wouldn’t understand
She’s the best thing that ever happened to me

As an adult
I have earned a few more trophies
for some exceptional achievements
So I added them to my collection

I just cleaned out the attic yesterday
And as I went though my boxes of trophies
I reminisced
It’s good to look back, you know
It’s good to have pride in your accomplishments

I decided
At this time of my life
All those trophies
Were just taking up too much space
We are downsizing
(that’s what people do when they retire)
So, the trophies have to go

As I was sorting through my trophy box
My wife came upstairs
She put her arms around me and said
“There’s been so many great times with you
And I’m so proud of all the things you have done
I never earned any trophies in my life like you have
I just couldn’t see any reason for it.
After all, I have always had the best trophy
I could ever have earned"

She looked me in the eyes and said
“You, I’m so proud to have you”

I guess she would have understood
After all
That she too, was my best trophy
