Squatters house in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa.
This is the view that most people around the world would associate Soweto with shanty towns and squatters houses, and possibly with the Government built so called “match-box houses” but there is much more to Soweto. A city in its own right within the city of Johannesburg it has a population of about 1 1/2 million, comprising 1/3 of the population of Johannesburg. Due to its huge size it has a wide denographic with many suburbs, the largest hospital in Africa and many other ammenites for its citizens. Of course there are still many people living in poverty, but government projects are gradually replacing shanty towns with new social housing.
