Two of the five volcanoes making up Volcanoes National Park which joins with parks in Uganda and the Congo and is the home of the Mountain Gorillas, made famous through the film “Gorillas In The Mist” which tells of the work and murder of naturalist Dianne Fossey with the Mountain Gorillas of Mount Sabinyo.
This park is the only home of the Mountain Gorilla, Gorilla gorilla beringei. There are only about 700 left in the wild. The park is also known as Virunga National Park. The tops of the mountains are usually covered in mist, and during some seasons of the year the mist comes much lower down the slopes.
