The sides of 2 huge tabular icebergs stuck in the fast ice at Cape Hallett, Ross Sea, Antarctica.
These icebergs are about the size of 10 story buildings with about 6-7 times as much under the surface of the frozen sea. The scale of these enormous tabular icebergs is hard to take in.
Canon EOS, zoom lens.
They are new icebergs having just calved from claciers or ice tongues in the previous summer and have got iced in during the winter. As the summer develops the fast ice will at least partially melt and the icebergs will be set free to travel around the Antarctic Continent until they eventually melt. In some cases this may take 3 years or more.
