Carsten Borchgrevink’s hut at Cape Adare, the Transntarctic Mountains and the Ross Sea.
Carsten Borchgrevink’s second trip to Antarctica was made in the “Southern Cross” and he and seven others were the first to over winter in Antarctica in 1899 at Cape Adare. The zoologist Nicolai Hansen died on 14 October 1899 becoming the first person to be buried on the Antarctic continent. During their stay they sledged to 78° 50S, setting a new southerly record.
The group lived in this hut for a year.
This image shows two bunks folded up against the wall.
Carsten Borchgrevink was not a very successful leader. The group of 8 split into two factions and one group of 4 ended up living in the ceiling space of this tiny hut.
The interior is just as it was left when the group was picked up to leave.
