Adelie Penguins, Pygoscelis adeliae, in the rookery at Cape Adare, Ross Sea, Antarctica. The chicks have just begun to hatch. The pair usually have 2 chicks. In this pebble nest the backside of one can just be seen as the parent pushes it back into the warm. It is common for only one chick to survive. The colony at Cape Adare is one of the biggest Adelie colonies in the Antarctica.
