Artist's Description

Looking across Cape Hallett the Transantarctic Mountains rise out of the fast ice. With a total length of about 3,500 km, the Transantarctic Mountains are one of the longest mountain ranges on Earth. The 100–300 km wide range forms the boundary between East Antarctica and West Antarctica. They rise to more than 4500 metres (14800 ft) above sea level.
(Featured in Natures Paintbrush.)
Close to shore huge tabular icebergs are stuck in the fast ice. These icebergs are about the size of a ten story building above the fast ice and about 6 to 7 times that below. They are new icebergs having just calved from claciers or ice tongues in the previous summer and have got iced in during the winter. As the summer develops the fast ice will at least partially melt and the icebergs will be set free to travel around the Antarctic Continent until they eventually melt. In some cases this may take 3 years or more.
