Adelie Penguins, Pygoscelis adeliae, in the rookery at Cape Adare, Ross Sea, Antarctica. The chicks have just begun to hatch. The pair usually have 2 chicks. In this pebble nest the backside of one and the black head of the other can just be seen. The first chick was hatched one day before and the second one on the day this was taken. It is common for only one chick to survive. The colony at Cape Adare is one of the biggest Adelie colonies in the Antarctica.
