Sculptural cross in the Modbury Church of Christ, South Australia entitled “The Instruments of Crucifixion”.
The cross was cut from a red gum with a chain saw. The large hand forged nails, the rope and the metal crown of thorns were fabricated. The knot hole on the left side represents the place where the spear was thrust into Jesus’ side.
It should be noted that contrary to general belief and custom the nails in a Roman crucifixion were not through the hands, but through the wrists, and a rope was used around the wrists and the crossbeam of the cross to prevent the weight of the body tearing the wrists and hands off the nails with the body therefor falling down.
