Large Male Polar Bear on the Tundra, Churchill, Canada by

Polar bear, Ursus maritimus, which means “sea bear”. Male Polar Bear walking on the tundra. This bear has not had anything to eat for about 8 months. He is waiting for the ice to freeze on Hudson Bay so that he can hunt for Harp Seals. Adult male polar bears weigh from 775 to more than 1,500 pounds, 350 to more than 680 kilos. Polar Bears are endangered due to global warming. It is estimated that the Churchill population will be unviable in 30 years, and it is the largest single Polar bear population in the world.
Canon 500D, zoom lens.

Congrats on the feature. Favourite for sure :)

About an hour from where I’m located, there is a facility which is dedicated solely to polar bears. The Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat (CPBH) is the only captive bear facility in the world dedicated solely to polar bears. It is so awesome to see a large polar bear in the wild – absolutely awesome shot. Great job!

  • Thank you Jenn. Are you In Winnipeg? I know they have just started a facility for saving Polar Bears, and then plan to return them to the wild. Cheers, Carole-Anne

That’s cool about Winnipeg. I didn’t know that :) I’m in Northeastern Ontario. Cochrane has the release and habitat program, it is a small down about an hour northeast of where I am.

  • Thanks for the info Jenn. It’s great when people take up the cause of the Polar Bear. Carole-Anne
