Portrait of a laughing Maasai (or Masai) woman, East Africa. The Maasai live across Kenya and Tanzania. In many ways the Masai have managed to retain their traditional culture, though children are now expected to go to government schools, & pressures have been put on their society by land laws & National Parks rules, however they maily dress in traditional clothing & jewellery & practice a rural lifestyle centred on cattle. The men and boys raise the cattle, while women do everything else.

Interesting I’ve not seen white beaded collars. Does the colour have any particular significance?
Hi Alberto. We saw quite a lot of white beaded collars – seemed to be the sign of married women in the region where we were (near Lake Nakuru in kenya) – but I am surmising. In other areas we saw multi-coloured ones. Carole-Anne
