Polar Bear, Mother & Cub, Churchill, Canada by

Polar bear, Ursus maritimus, which means “sea bear”. (Featured in Amazing Wildlife.) Polar bear mother and her cub walking on the coastal Tundra. This bear has not had anything to eat for about 8 months. She is waiting for the ice to freeze on Hudson Bay so that she can hunt for Harp Seals. Adult female polar bears weigh from 330 to more than 550 pounds, 150 to more than 250 kilos. The cub is 10-11 months old & still breast feeding. Polars Bears are endangered due to global warming. It is estimated that the Churchill population will be unviable in 30 years, and it is the largest single Polar bear population.

Great shot of mama bear and cub. No food in 8 months? Wow. Good thing you weren’t too close, or you might start looking a lot like a seal to a bear that hungry. -J:
