Inspired by ~ My unknown encounter with Greta Garbo.
Living in Manhattan in 1984…I wandered into a tiny grocery store to buy crackers.
Finding only two brands I knew nothing of…I asked an elderly lady next to me if she
could recommend one. She quickly chose one over the other. I thanked her.
She then asked where I was from etc. How I liked living in Manhattan.
I replied..I didn’t care for it much for there was NO PRIVACY..sirens all day & night
and no fresh air. I was used to country living where you could walk out your front door
naked if you wanted & no one to see you do it.
She asked if I had a car and if I could drive a stick shift. How far I had to drive to buy things.
If I had a phone..which I didn’t.. for … I hate to talk on them, prefer face to face.
She agreed she hated them too. We talked a while more and
We then went to pay for our purchases..her before me.
The checker said she it was good to see her out for it was a while since she had been in the store.
The elderly lady said ..Yes it has been a while.
As she started to leave…she turned to me & said: It was so nice to meet you & I so enjoyed
our conversation. I told her the pleasure was all mine & thanked her again for help with the crackers.
She disappeared out the door.
The checker looked at me with shock on her face & said..She had worked at the store for over 20 years and that lady had NEVER spoken to a soul but her.
I told her we had a long conversation over the crackers.
As I started to leave she touched my arm & said: Greta Garbo shops in here quite often.
I was speechless!
How Ironic..me talking Privacy to Greta Garbo.
You never know when you are making a memory.
