A woodpecker pulls what appears to be an annelid from a rotting stump. I have found the best philosophy with these skittish birds is shoot first on continuous shoot and worry about such things as composition later.

I’m a retired stationary engineer who lives on British Columbia’s scenic Sunshine Coast, which although on the mainland, can only be accessed by water or air – just the way we Coasters like it!
Wildlife and nature photography is my hobby and passion. My primary camera is a Nikon D90 and most of these photos are taken with a Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm VR lens.
I appreciate and try to answer all sincere comments.

Wow! This is a beauty, Carl! We used to see them all the time in Minnesota in the dead trees behind the house. They would whack away like woodsmen and the chips would be flying! They can make short work of dead wood! Great shot.
Thanks Susana. I didn’t think I had anything worth keeping until I saw it on the computer. I took it on the foot trail at the end of our road where there’s quite a few stumps like this, so it’s definitely woodpecker territory. I didn’t actually mean to submit to the group btw!

Oh What a wonderful capture this is of that beautiful woodpecker, love the texture of the tree stump.
Oh I see I was a bad boy and didn’t pay attention to what I was checking off! Anyway, thanks very much for the lovely comment Karen. They are indeed lovely birds aren’t they?
