Another shot of a rufous hummingbird sampling a crocosmia (aka montbretia). The wing is of course opaque. The illusion of transparency is caused by the wing speed – about 60 complete beats per second – and the lateral shutter motion. (No, I didn’t plan it that way!)

Taken near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, British Columbia, Canada.

CAMERA: NIKON D90
LENS: NIKKOR AF-S 70-300mm VR @ 300mm
Aperture F5.6
Shutter speed 1/1250 sec.

I’m a retired stationary engineer who lives on British Columbia’s scenic Sunshine Coast, which although on the mainland, can only be accessed by water or air – just the way we Coasters like it!

Wildlife and nature photography is my hobby and passion. My primary camera is a Nikon D90 and most of these photos are taken with a Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm VR lens.

I appreciate and try to answer all sincere comments.

I would have loved to have been there when you chimped that capture. Pure wonder.

  • Thank you very much for the comment and favorite Catherine. Not so sure you would have wanted to be there though – I was standing in a ditch in front of a neighbor’s garden when they decided to let their none-too-friendly dog out :)
