Rampant in the Wind by

CAMERA: NIKON D90
LENS: SIGMA APO 150-500mm @ 500mm

Two hooded merganser drakes on a breezy day. The “starburst” is created by wind blowing on the merganser’s crest.

Taken near Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, Canada.

Hood down – That looks more like a duck!

About Carl Olsen

I’m a retired stationary engineer who lives on British Columbia’s scenic Sunshine Coast, which although on the mainland, can only be accessed by water or air – just the way we Coasters like it!

Wildlife and nature photography is my hobby and passion. My primary camera is a Nikon D90 and most of these photos are taken with a Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm VR lens.

I appreciate and try to answer all sincere comments.

So cute Carl, love the hair do.

  • Aren’t they though? The male rarely displays the crest fully erect for more than a moment, but when they do they remind me of a cartoon duck. They’re fascinating to watch, as their head profile is constantly changing, even without the wind.

Wonderful capture, good colour and detail!

  • Thank you Meladana! As you can see, the wing coloring of these ducks is both complex and subtle.
