With dusk setting in, this Columbian blacktailed buck came out of the bush at the top of the beach, picked up my scent, and after I talked softly to it, sauntered by me and waded into the sea. Over the next few minutes, it took several brief drinks. I’ve seen deer lick and eat kelp for salt, but this is the first time I’ve seen one drink seawater. The great blue heron in the background is fishing.
