Poachers slaughtered a record 668 rhino in 2012 as demand for their horns continues to surge on the black market in Asia

Over 60% of the slaughtered pachyderms were from the Kruger National Park.
And the numbers are escalating every year!

2010: Poached rhinos 333
2011: Poached rhinos 448
2012: Poached rhinos 668
February 2013: 96 ALREADY !

It is awful , they showed it on a programme over here they had slaughtered several and the baby stood with it’s dead mother for four days , so terribly sad .They will end up being an endangered species soon .

    Great shot Anna x

  • It is so sad Irene ! And black rhinos are so scarce! In 16 years of safaris I have only seen it, in Kruger, maybe 6-7 times – trhis is the best shot I ever managed!
Thanks for still commenting on my work – Work and commitments have drastically curtailed my visits on RB :(

Captured beautifully, I don’t want to see Rhino’s in just photographs, it’s disgusting that such an amazing animal is killed for it’s horn. I thought they were cutting the horns off the Rhino’s to deter the poachers?? I suppose they can only do so much…. so very sad…..x

  • They tried Josie….and the poachers still killed them for the stump! The problem is escalating out of control, also due to corrupt rangers that sell their skills to the poachers to track the rhinos.
We here cannot see a light at the end of the tunnel – retired dedicated rangers lend their expertise, with no pay, to patrol hot spots.

    All seems to no vail…….
