Student and Teacher
Taken at Wat Rakhang in Bangkok, Thailand. This temple is a little more obscure in terms of tourist attractions but what attracted me to it was the fact that it apparently had a nice collection of bells. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the temple itself was surrounded by these small chimes that rang with the waving of the wind. Even more pleasantly surprised was I when I realized that there was a class being held in the temple. What caught my eye was the traditional tattoo on the younger monks shoulder.

There’s alot to see & think about in this shot Caroline.
I love your use of selective colour on those sepia tones rather that B&W…. nice move!!
When you say it’s a traditional tattoo, do you mean a traditional motif, or that it was applied traditionally? Because if it was applied traditionally….. YEEOWCH!!!
Caroline Fournier replied
Thank you Rosemary … I’ll add the long shot that goes along with this. I love this photo and I’ve had it set aside for a while now wondering how I was going to present it and I’m glad I tried the sepia tones instead. As for the tattoo, I was just surprised to see how some monks were actually quite covered in them (actually quite common among the thais in general … I definitely got a couple of looks for my two!) so I can only assume that this was applied in the traditional way.

What an exquisitely beautiful photograph! You have captured the moment and the body language perfectly. Technically it shows what can be done with sensitivity and a real feeling for the subject. This is one of the very few ‘manipulated’ images I know of that really enhance the picture. Thank you
for this work of art.
Caroline Fournier replied
Thank you so very much Stuart for that incredibly kind comment. This was such a special trip for me (my first solo trip and halfway across the world at that) and this particular moment in this temple was definitely a highlight. I am so touched to read your comment and very happy that the photo touched a chord with you.
Stuart Thorpe
You are so very welcome Caroline. I don’t know if you had a glance at my work, but in my profile text I say that ultimately, the only thing that matters to me about art is: does it move me? This image does. Touches a major chord. Go well and give us all more like this.
Caroline Fournier replied
Well thank you again and you definitely have given me a little motivational boost!!! Enjoy the holidays!
