My portrait today is of 20 year old, Sahar Adish. I was inspired by Sahar because of her courage and her power to achieve her dream to receive an education and by her will to survive.

I was compelled to create Sahar’s portrait because of my continuing feelings for the little girl from Afghanistan, Our War: Day 199-20110215.

I composed my portrait of Sahar as a symbol of hope for my little girl of Day 199 as if she is gazing at Sahar. In this way, both portraits provide me with the concept that maybe the little girl may be dreaming of a better future, maybe she will also see her dreams come true.

I learned of Sahar’s story today by viewing her give an acceptance speech to over 750 guests at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Freedom Award 2007 dinner on You Tube, “Sahar Adish: The Power of an Afghan Girl’s Education.”

Sahar and her family escaped the Taliban. The IRC then assisted Sahar and her family. Sahar however is a large part of her own success story.

I believe Sahar’s strength, perseverance, and determination is why she is now a pre-med student at the University of Virginia. She received the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award for a film she helped to make telling her family’s heroic story of escape from the Taliban.

“Since 1980, the International Rescue Committee has helped nearly 7,000 Afghans start new lives in the U.S.” – “Sahar Adish: The Power of an Afghan Girl’s Education.”

USA Terrorism = more opium production!
    Afghan war = USA Terrorism
Peace = USA withdrawal from Afghanistan.

  • Albert, thank you for your opinion which is very well stated. Brevity is a virtue.
