Journal-"I made this drawing of a soldier crying":http://www.redbubble.com/people/carasinjak/jour...

I made this drawing of a soldier crying using a variety of colors because for me at this time, at the beginning of my research into what the war and its impact on soldiers was having plus the complexity as well had begun to really hit home for me.

At first, my research was mainly You Tube videos created by soldiers/veterans returning from our war.

I saw this soldier, this war veteran’s photograph many times…and for me his face, his emotion symbolized for me the pain, frustration, exhaustion that I have seen in many troops in our war today.

His face is one I have seen on movies of previous wars…who is he? He is the face of the pain, the emotion, the sadness, the despair, the resilience and the bravery and the experiences of war that I will never know-his face (not him, this man) is what war means to me.

I wanted to create my own image of not a realistic portrait of this U.S. Soldier but an abstract realistic bordering on surrealistic war portrait to show how I was feeling for him and to show visually my own perception, my own interpretation of how for me he represents many soldiers, many cultures who are part of our war.

  1. A side note: Part 00 series began prior to the official series that I started on August 1, 2010. Therefore, the “Part-00” series title is my way of distinguishing my war drawings as either prior to or after that date. I started Part-00 in part as a way to mentally and emotionally prepare myself for my brother’s deployment.
