The name “Chinstrap” derives from the narrow black band under their heads which extends from ear to ear, just below the chin and the cheeks. It appears as though they are wearing black helmets. They grow to 68 cm long and and weigh between 3 and 6 kg.

While this photograph was taken at Yankee Harbour (in the South Shetland Archipelago at 64°19’S 62°57’W) their colony is believed to be on nearby Half Moon Island.

Oooh that looks cold. We too saw Chinnies in the snow at Deception Island! Lovely shot – all ready for a Christmas card!! ;o)

  • Thank you Krys, it was cold but so worth the effort getting off the ship to see these little fellas – no landing at Deception Island for us, it was too rough!
