Artist's Description

This is the first piece in a series of ten pen and inks focusing on working with proportion, scale, and architecture then putting it altogether into a sort of still life. It was originally done in 2007 using Indian ink on white Bristol board. Its original size was 30″×24.″ and I added a couple close ups (in the same gallery) to let you see the level of quality and detail better.

Since this was the first in the series I used it as a basis for all the following pieces. The basic initial idea was to choose a selection of things I enjoyed that were just laying around (mostly having to do with different games such as cards, poker, and chess) and putting them together with different styles of architecture. One odd thing you might notice is that all the cards shown in the picture are spades. I decided to do this mostly because, in my opinion, they are the most esthetically pleasing and because they are considered the luckiest of all the suits. something else you might not catch is the chess board on the left. It has a layout in which the two kings (black and white) are put in checkmate by a rogue queen (gray). I also incorporated chess pieces into the architecture of the buildings in the background. You can see this with the bell tower (which is more-or-less shaped like the top of a king chess piece) and with the rook tower on the right. Along the street there are four signs hanging outside of building doors which have each of the four suit symbols: hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs on them. There are some other interesting things, but I’ll let you look at the picture yourself.
